So for my remix I did Streets by Kollaps. In terms of where I went with the song it is not a huge deviation from the original but my aim was to capture what this band do live. Or to give the impression that the song was something the band might do live. So a longer, faster, more agressive version of the version that is currently online. I believe that most band's should aim to sound on record, the way they do in a venue and given that Kollaps are an incredibly loud, confronting, wall of noise that might best be compared to orchestrated static soaked in a pint glass, I think what I produced accurately reflects that. Sonically it's not perfect, it's not well balanced but it gets the point across.

Originally I sought out to emulate the sound and influence that Enstürzende Neubauten has obviously had on this group. I don't think it was reflected in the first release that this band put out but it's certainly present when you see them live. The use of found sound style percussion was contributed early on in the track along with sampled feedback through out the intro and outro. Without intending to, I think the influence of 90's industrial style music came through more than I would have liked. Early EN recordings are generally very sparse in terms of their "instrumentation" and rarely reflect what might be called a song structure. I probably stayed a little too close to the original in terms of arrangement but I really was not sure how to pull it apart while still reflecting what the band might be capable of replicating in a live situation.

I faced huge issues actually getting the song to a point where the timing was reasonable. The original drumming performance was absolutely awful. I did quite a bit of mixing and editing in Pro Tools to finally sum the drums down into one stem but because the timing was altered so much there were sections where I mixed the vocal in with the drum stem before bringing them in to Abelton. Over warping the vocal was making it sound incredibly odd in some sections. Though maybe that would have suited had I let it go a little further... Mixing in Ableton for the final exported track was also a little challenging as I really don't know that DAW well. So I tried as best I could to get the track to the point where all of the elements were heard but I really don't think the sonic balance is great. However I think that fact that the song was intentionally taken to a pretty rough place helps hide that a little.

I haven't yet had a chance to show this track to the artist. A remix is not something they were asking me for and given that I am not what you would call proficient in the realm of electronic music, I am sure they are not expecting anything ground breaking back. I am seeing the bass player next week though so I'll definitely show him the song.
