It's interesting to compare both the song that we recorded and the original because there are some elemements that I think we did very well at and others I think we executed poorly. On the whole though I don't think that we did a bad job.
In terms of instrumentation we had everything that was included in the song. Even the less obvious elements like tambourine and the synths. When looking at the performance I wish we had been a little stricter on some parts but we were also working on a very strict schedule. We were also faced with the issue of having a guitarist that was having trouble playing the song so we had to be very patient with how that was tracked. Sonically though I think the guitars were probably the one element that sounds closest to the original. The bass is a little bottom end heavy and maybe a little high in the mix and the drums sound is not really close in tone but I think we actually did quite well to replicate the techniques that may have been used back in 1979. I can safely say though everything on the internet is either a half truth or just complete nonsense that have never attempted this themselves. I think due to the fact there was such a liberal amount of effects used on this particular track we were always going to have a hard time to recreate how it sounded. The early digital effects can viewed as sounding unique but that's that very polite way of saying they sounded shit. Stack 5-6 unique reverbs and delays on top of each other and you're going to have a very interesting sound.
Lastly, unfortunately I don't think our recording has much of a vibe. You can really tell that everything was recorded a week apart. The elements really don't gel in a way that sounds like a great song was recorded. I would say that this is because we tracked it piece by piece and spent a lot of time and focus on trying to make sure each element sounded perfect on it's own when compared to the original song while forgetting what it should sound like in our mix. Also we spent a long time mixing drums and that really cut down how long we could spend trying to get our final cohesive.
However this was the first time I actually had fun participating in a group activity this year so ultimately this was a great project to be involved with.
